BHP Billiton is not an Australian Company. You should review their web page. It is a dual listed company having its roots in Autralia (BHP Limited) and BHP Billiton PLC

India, Need to Perform Well.

Well, the dominance of the oil corporations is obvious, and they are likely to stay on top of the list given the soaring oil prices. However what surprised me (to some extent) is the fact that hi-tech companies (such as, say, Apple, Google or Nokia) have not made a significant breakthrough in terms of their positions within the list. Probably, this will change in the near future as they spread their activities in the developing markets such as China and India.

Alas! There is no Pakistani company in the list.

How is it that State Grid went from 800,000 to 1,500,000 employees in just one year? In general how accurate are data from Chinese companies?

The way Indian oil companies have progressed, they will be positioned themselves within the top 100 very soon.

It is truly impressive to see through the list of those giant companies and kind of products or services that we inevitably enjoy one way or the other. I am not sure if there is one or not. I hope Forbes can make a list of Fortune Global 500 of the “green” companies, means their products or services have positive contribution to environment or least negative impact on the environment. Is there any direct selling company in Global Fortune list in any category?

I have always wondered why marketvalue is seen and the norm to value a company instead of revenue, profits or a combination of al three.

Marketvalue alone will go up and down on nothing more than rumours and hype. How can that be seen as a true figure to measure to size or value of a company?

Dear Steve Sydney NSW: BHP Billiton’s 2006 revenues were about $32 billion, while the companies ranked in the Global 500’s top 20 all had at least $121 billion in sales last year. It is correctly ranked at number 205. –CNNMoney.com Editors

ING is the Largest Life insurance company in the world. But what is happening in India, after 5 years of its launching of Life Insurance Business?

I have been working in A.P.Moller-Maersk Group. The best part of this great company is the emphasis given on the ‘Values’ set by the organization: Humbleness, Uprightness, Constant Care, Our Name & Our Employees. Living with the values is the way forward - syas the company & all employees are inspired & motivated to adhere to these values. We are number one in the shipping industry but that doesn’t stop us - always raising the bar by setting high standards. The other important aspect is: do not hesitate to learn from the mistake.

I once bought a product from one of the companies listed. It broke and I had to ask for a refund. Eventually I got my money back. Makes me wonder about the long term sustainability of this list.
Thanks for asking for feedback. I can see how this would be very helpful to others.

I had to laugh when I saw that UAL reported more profit than sales! What creative accounting permits this?

Maybe their accountants followed:

“Would you like to ride in my profitable baloon

we will float among the stars

you and I

Up up and away in my beautiful cocoon

Way up in the air

With the billions with us

Up, up and away

In my beautiful baloon”

…rhyme it with 5th dimension song, “up, up and away”

I don’t understand something.
$39,000,000,000 in profits, yet Exxon is not price gouging? And they still cannot afford to pay off the fine issued as a result of the Exxon Valdez shipwreck in Alaska?
Can anyone explain this without putting a spin on it?

Does anyone make up an index fund of Global 500? I would buy

Posted By Loren Los Angeles : July 12, 2007 4:26 pm

What factors are considered for a company to be “profitable”? Do they need to make profits or just have the highest revenues? Some of the lower companies (e.g., AT&T) had a fantastic rate of return. Then I look at #5, General Motors, which had a negative number for their profits. Perhaps the list should be titled–the top companies with the highest reported revenue?

I am trying to figure out ow you got the numbers for BHP Biliton so wrong.

They should be in the top 20 with their revenue, but you have them at 205. Here is a link or you to assist your researchers in the future http://markets.news.com.au/newscorp/Company/Profile.aspx?SecId=BHP

Wal Mart is un ethical. Today Jul 11 07, when trying to return a defective product purchase two days earlier, to a WalMart store in Lilburn Ga., Hwy 29,the customer exchange service manager refused to allow the exchange, would not even discuss alternatives, and was the most rude, arrogant person I have experienced in many years. Do not shop at Wal Mart!!!!!!!

Interesting to see how high the profits of the pharma industry are as a percentage of revenue - 20% profits seem to be the norm.

US companies are still at a disadvantage since most countries are very restrictive on acquisitions from foreing firms, not to mention tariffs, the US has about the lowest of any nation.

Hmmm…out of the top five companies, three are oil companies and five out of the top 10 are oil companies and our prices keep rising….

Posted By carol ripley, lincoln nebraska : July 11, 2007 3:09 pm

Does it infuriate anyone except me that of the top 10 companies, 5 are oil companies?

I think Fortune and CNN should realize that Dow Chemical is not headquartered in Texas. Dow Chemical has its headquarters in Midland, Michigan. I drove by the HQ yesterday, where it has stood for many years. Get your facts straight and stop giving Texas credit they do not deserve. And oh yeah, the largest chemical plant facility is also located in Midland, MICHIGAN, not Texas.

Thank you
